This three-week field study in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, for the Illinois Design Consulting and the NRES/ACES + LATAM research program, combined ecological fieldwork, systems thinking, and UX ethnography to investigate the complex intersection of tourism, cultural resilience, and environmental sustainability.

The Challenge

Visitors and communities lack integrated, human-centered systems that balance ecological sustainability with cultural preservation and tourism experiences. Unmanaged tourism threatens ecosystems, while valuable Mayan sustainability practices are often excluded from modern design solutions.
